Worth it, or not? An honest answer.

Window film is a thin layer bonded to the glass you already have. It changes what passes through that glass. Five jobs it does well:

• Heat. Solar film cuts the heat coming through the glass, so a west- or south-facing room stays usable in the afternoon. Lighter load on your AC. Heat and glare film covers the shades.
• Glare. The same film softens the light that washes out a TV or a monitor, without closing the blinds.
• UV and fading. Film blocks up to 99% of UV, the main cause of fading in floors, rugs, furniture and art near the glass.
• Privacy. Reflective film gives daytime privacy on street- and neighbor-facing glass. Frost and Whiteout give it day and night. Privacy film explains both.
• Security. Guardian security film holds broken glass in the frame and slows forced entry. It does not make glass unbreakable.

Film cannot fix a window that is failing.

• Drafts. Cold air around the frame comes from a failed seal or worn weatherstripping. Film goes on the glass and does not touch that.
• Fog between the panes. A broken seal in a dual-pane unit. Film does not go on fogged glass and would not clear it.
• Cracks and chips. Film does not go on cracked, chipped or bullseyed glass. The glass has to be replaced first.
• Noise. Film is not a soundproofing product.

The glass checker on our rate card page asks about fog, cracks, chips, wired glass and existing film first. Any of those means a window repair, not film.

• One-way film reverses at night. With the lights on inside and dark outside, people can see in. For privacy after dark, the answer is Frost, Whiteout or curtains, not a reflective film.
• Not every window qualifies. Dual panes over 40 square feet, single panes over 100, clear glass over 3/8 inch thick, odd shapes over 25 square feet and unevenly shaded glass fall outside the warranty. Pairings the chart marks not safe, we will not install.
• Film cannot be moved. It bonds to the glass it is installed on. Replace the window and the film goes with the old glass.
• Darker films change the look. Silver looks like mirror glass from the street in daylight. If you want no visible change, say so at the estimate and we stay in the lighter neutral and ceramic shades.
• There is a minimum. $400 per job. One small bathroom window on its own is a $400 job.

Blinds block the view along with the heat. Film cuts heat and glare with the blinds open, so you keep the daylight and the view. Film does not replace blinds for bedtime darkness; Blackout film does, but only on tempered single-pane glass. The honest pairing is film for the day and blinds or curtains for the night.

New windows fix seals, drafts, fogged panes and rotten frames. Film fixes heat, glare, UV and privacy on glass that is otherwise sound. If your windows are in good shape, film treats the exact windows that bother you, at the rate on the card, usually in a single visit. We identify your glass and check it against the film manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations before we recommend anything. The limits we follow:

• Single pane under 100 square feet
• Dual pane under 40 square feet
• Clear glass under 3/8 inch thick
• Odd shapes over 25 square feet and uneven exterior shading void the warranty
• Triple pane treated like dual pane
