Solar film is a thin layer bonded to the pane that reflects and absorbs a large share of the sun's heat before it reaches the room. The darker and more reflective the film, the more heat and glare it cuts. The west room stops spiking every afternoon and the AC runs a lighter load in July. What it costs has worked examples.

Ultra View 35, Cool Alloy 60, and Pristine Ceramic 70 and 80 cut heat and keep a bright room and a clear view. Silver 20 sits at the other end: the biggest heat cut and a mirror look from the street. We put samples on your own glass.

Inside the glass, or outside it.
Most homes get interior film: room side of the pane, out of the weather, no edge sealing. For glass the chart rejects for interior film, and for the hottest west elevations, X-Series, Ext Pristine or Zen SSX 55 go on the outside, with edge sealing so weather cannot lift an edge.
Window reflection melting your turf or siding?
Low-E glass on a neighbor's house, or your own, can focus sunlight onto the lawn or wall below. Artificial turf melts. Vinyl siding warps. A low-reflectance exterior film on that glass takes the sting out. Ext Pristine 70 and 80 are rated at 9% exterior reflectance, Zen SSX 55 at 10%. Both are $18 per sq ft plus edge sealing, installed on the outside of the pane.
Film can't fix a failed seal. It fixes heat.
Solar film's job is summer. If the same room is cold all winter, ask about low-E film options at the estimate. They help hold room warmth in. Film does not fix a failed seal, a fogged pane or a draft, and we say so. More in our post on low-E window film in a Colorado winter.

We check your glass against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations before we recommend anything. The limits:
- Single pane under 100 sq ft. Dual pane under 40 sq ft. Triple pane treated as dual.
- Clear glass under 3/8 in thick.
- Odd-shaped windows over 25 sq ft and uneven exterior shading void the warranty.
- No film on cracked, chipped, fogged or wired glass.
If a film is not safe on your glass, we say so and recommend something that is. Check your glass.
Install day. What to expect.
