Privacy without blinds. Light without the view in.

A bathroom window that faces the neighbor's yard. A sidelight that shows the whole hallway. Frosted film fixes both the same way. It turns clear glass into a soft, even, translucent surface. Daylight still comes through. A clear line of sight does not.

That is the difference from one-way privacy film. Reflective film reverses at night when the lights are on inside. Frost, Whiteout and Blackout do not. What you get at noon is what you get at midnight.

It also reads as a design choice, not a workaround. Frosted film gives the look of etched glass on the panes you already have.

• Bathrooms. Full coverage on the shower or tub window. Bright room, no view in, no blinds collecting moisture.
• Front-door sidelights. A band or a full panel so no one on the porch sees down the hall.
• Glass doors and patio doors. A frosted band at eye level keeps the door bright and the room private.
• Ground-floor and street-facing glass. Bedrooms and basement windows that face a sidewalk or a neighbor's deck.
• Home offices and glass-walled conference rooms. Frost the wall, or just a band, and the room goes private without construction. See office tint for the rest of the workplace.
• Storefront glass. A frosted logo or privacy band on a shop front.

All three cost $11 per square foot. They do different jobs.

• Frost lets diffused light through with a soft, etched-glass look. Shapes and shadows show faintly. It is the usual starting point for bathrooms and sidelights.
• Whiteout lets light through with a solid white finish. It hides more than Frost and reads as a clean, opaque panel.
• Blackout blocks light. Media rooms, a bedroom for a shift worker, a storage room. The manufacturer approves it only on tempered single-pane glass, so we confirm the glass before quoting.

None of the three cuts heat the way a solar film does. If a hot, glaring room is the problem, heat and glare film is the answer, not frost.

Frost does not have to cover the whole pane. Common requests:

• A single band across the middle of a glass door, top and bottom clear.
• A gradient that fades from frosted at the bottom to clear at the top.
• Dot, line or rice-paper textures on a feature wall.
• A logo or house number cut from frost on a sidelight or storefront.

Start with what you need to hide. A bathroom usually wants full, even coverage. A glass door or conference wall often wants a band at eye level so the space still feels open. A storefront wants the logo where foot traffic sees it.

Then decide how much light to keep. Frost keeps the most. Whiteout keeps light but hides the view. Blackout keeps none. We can hold samples against your own glass on the estimate.

We identify your glass on the estimate and check it against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations before we recommend anything. The limits we follow:

• Single-pane glass under 100 square feet
• Dual-pane glass under 40 square feet
• Clear glass under 3/8 inch thick
• Odd-shaped windows over 25 square feet void the warranty
• Uneven exterior shading voids the warranty
• Triple-pane glass treated like dual pane

Blackout carries one more rule: tempered single-pane glass only. If a film is not safe on your glass, we say so and recommend something that is. Check your glass.
