Broomfield is mostly new glass. The city was conceived by the Turnpike Land Company as a master-planned model city, and the first homes in Broomfield Heights went up in 1955 north of 120th Avenue. Since then, the growth has run north: Interlocken in the 1980s, FlatIron Crossing in 2000, the City and County of Broomfield in 2001, and the subdivisions of north Broomfield such as Anthem and McKay Landing in the years since. At about 5,348 feet, midway between Denver and Boulder on US 36, most Broomfield homes were built with dual-pane, and often low-E, glass.
That glass is the reason this page is about safety before it is about heat. The wrong film on a sealed dual-pane unit can stress the glass. So we check your windows against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations before we recommend anything, and we refuse films the chart marks unsafe. Here is what that means for a Broomfield house.

A dual-pane window is two sheets of glass sealed around a gas-filled gap. Film on the inside pane changes how much heat that pane absorbs. Past a certain size, the stress on a sealed unit gets too high, which is why the manufacturer caps dual-pane glass at 40 square feet per pane.

Low-E coatings and factory tints add a second check. The chart approves fewer films on coated glass, and the darker, more absorbing films are the first to fall off the list. Ultra View 35 at $11 per sq ft is the film we most often see approved on newer glass here. Pristine Ceramic 40 at $15 per sq ft is the neutral, non-metal step up. Triple-pane glass gets the same 40 sq ft rule as dual-pane.
Broomfield Heights and the midcentury core. Original glass or replacements.
The 1955 streets of Broomfield Heights and the neighborhoods that followed through the 1960s are a different case. Some homes still have single-pane glass, which qualifies for almost every film under 100 sq ft per pane. Many have had replacement windows, which are dual-pane and go back to the 40 sq ft rule.
A single house can have both. The estimate is where we sort it out, window by window, and a house can end up with two films for two kinds of glass.
Can film crack glass? Only the wrong film on the wrong glass.
Yes, film can crack glass when the combination is wrong. That is not a reason to skip film. It is the reason to check the chart. The films the chart marks "use caution" or "not safe" for your glass are the ones we do not install, even if you ask. A film that passes, installed correctly, is covered by the manufacturer's film warranty.
Three other rules protect the glass and the warranty. Clear glass must be under 3/8 inch thick. Odd-shaped windows over 25 sq ft void the warranty. So does uneven shading from outside, like a tree or an overhang covering half a pane.
HOA-friendly films for Broomfield neighborhoods.
If your Broomfield neighborhood has an HOA with rules on how glass looks from the street, the neutral films are the answer. Pristine Ceramic and Ultra View look closest to untreated glass.
