972 film-and-glass combinations. We check yours.
Longmont was laid out in the 1870s by the Chicago-Colorado Colony, on a grid near where St. Vrain and Left Hand creeks meet, with Longs Peak standing over the west end of every street. The city now runs across Boulder and Weld counties at just under a mile of elevation, the lowest of the Boulder-corridor cities we serve and still high enough that the sun works harder on floors and furniture than it does at sea level.
The glass in Longmont is as layered as the city. East of Main Street, the East Side Historic District is mostly nineteenth-century Queen Anne houses. West of Main, the West Side Historic District is early-twentieth-century homes, Edwardian vernacular, American Foursquare and bungalow. Then come the established neighborhoods to the west and northwest, Southmoor and Longmont Estates among them, and the planned subdivisions east and southeast, Clover Basin and Quail and their neighbors, plus Prospect New Town on the south side, built from the mid-1990s on. Old single-pane sash on one street, low-E dual-pane on the next.
That is why we do not quote from a phone photo. We come out, identify the glass in each opening, and check it against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations. Then we write the quote.
Historic east and west sides. Original sash, faded floors.
A Queen Anne or a Foursquare in Longmont's historic districts can still have its original single-pane windows, sometimes with wavy period glass. Original wood floors and old rugs sit right in front of them. Decades of south and west sun have done what sun does.
Original single-pane glass is the easiest case in the chart. Almost every film we install qualifies, up to 100 square feet per pane, as long as the glass is not cracked or chipped. Ultra View 5 at $11 per sq ft blocks up to 99% of UV and does not change how a historic window looks from the sidewalk. Pristine Ceramic 70 at $16 per sq ft adds heat control and stays near clear. If a porch has been enclosed into a sunroom, that glass gets the same check; sunroom panes are often larger and sometimes tempered, and the chart decides.
Planned subdivisions and Prospect. Dual-pane, low-E, 40 square feet.
Homes in the newer planned neighborhoods came with dual-pane glass, and most of it is low-E. Prospect New Town, laid out in the mid-1990s, is the same story with bigger windows. Low-E helps in a Longmont winter. It also narrows which films the chart approves, because the coating already reflects part of the heat.
- Each dual-pane unit must be under 40 square feet for the film warranty to hold.
- Triple-pane glass gets the same 40 square foot cap as an in-house rule.
- A dark film on an oversized dual-pane unit can stress the glass. We do not install it.
- Odd-shaped windows over 25 square feet void the warranty.
Ultra View 35 at $11 per sq ft is our first pick on approved dual-pane glass. Pristine Ceramic 40 at $15 per sq ft is the neutral, non-metal step up. Guardian security film at $20 per sq ft plus $4 per lineal ft edge sealing goes on ground-floor sliders and sidelights, subject to the same 40 square foot rule.
Longs Peak windows. West glass, afternoon heat.
The mountain the city is named for sits due west, and Longmont houses of every era put glass on that side to see it. West glass takes the low afternoon sun straight on. By 4pm the room is hot, the glare is on the TV, and the blinds come down on the view.
Film keeps the view and cuts the heat. Silver 20 at $10 per sq ft cuts the most and adds daytime privacy with a reflective look. Cool Alloy 35 at $12 per sq ft is a softer, warmer tone. For the worst west pane, an exterior film like Ext Pristine 70 at $18 per sq ft plus $2 per lineal ft edge sealing stops the heat outside the glass, with 9% exterior reflectance so it stays neutral from the yard.
