West-facing room unusable after 3pm? Film fixes that.

Littleton lies on the South Platte River just east of the Front Range, about a mile up, with Chatfield Reservoir off its southwest corner. Sit in a west-facing Littleton living room in July and the problem explains itself. The foothills are right there, the sun drops toward them all afternoon, and it comes through the glass low and hard until it finally sets.

The city's houses were built for exactly that view. Littleton grew fast in the postwar decades, and that boom left a stock of mid-century homes with wide windows on the view side. Downtown, the Main Street district is older red brick, and the houses around it are older still. On the newer end, the subdivisions on the city's edges came with dual-pane glass.

Different eras, same afternoon. Film cuts the heat and glare at the glass and leaves the view alone.

The 4pm wall of heat. Lighter shades that keep the view.

A west window in Littleton takes the sun at its lowest, hottest angle. Blinds fix it by erasing the reason you bought the house. Film does not have to be dark to work.

Ultra View 35 at $11 per sq ft cuts glare and heat and stays near clear. Cool Alloy 60 at $12 per sq ft is even lighter, for a room you want bright. Pristine Ceramic 40 at $15 per sq ft is a neutral, non-metal film with more heat control and no mirror look. Silver 20 at $10 per sq ft cuts the most and adds daytime privacy, with a reflective finish from outside. We hold samples up to your actual window at the estimate so you see the difference before you choose.

The load on your AC gets lighter, too. We do not publish a savings number, because we cannot measure it in your house.

Mid-century glass. Big panes, older windows, faded floors.

Littleton's ranches and mid-century moderns were built with wide windows and sliding doors on the view side. Some still have original single-pane glass. Some have been replaced with dual-pane units since. Both come with sun-faded hardwood, rugs and furniture in front of them.

Single-pane glass qualifies for almost every film, up to 100 square feet per pane. Replacement dual-pane units must be under 40 square feet per pane, and a low-E coating narrows the list. A wide mid-century picture window can be over that line, so we measure. Ultra View 5 at $11 per sq ft blocks up to 99% of UV and looks like nothing happened to the glass. On a house whose look matters, that is the point.

Patio doors, sunrooms and walk-out basements.

The glass that faces the yard is the glass that takes the sun. Sliding patio doors run big, often 6 feet by 6 feet 8 inches, which is around 40 square feet per panel and right at the dual-pane cap. A walk-out basement door and its side windows sit low and west, and an enclosed porch or sunroom is glass on three sides.

We check each of those panes separately. Where a door or panel is over the cap, we tell you which film the chart allows or whether it should stay bare. For the worst west glass, an exterior film like Ext Pristine 70 at $18 per sq ft plus $2 per lineal ft edge sealing takes the heat off outside the pane, and its 9% exterior reflectance stays neutral from the yard. Ground-floor doors near a lock can take Guardian security film at $20 per sq ft plus $4 per lineal ft edge sealing, which holds shattered glass in the frame and slows forced entry.

We check your glass before we pick a film.

We identify your glass and check it against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations before we recommend anything.

  • Single-pane glass under 100 sq ft.
  • Dual-pane glass under 40 sq ft. Triple-pane treated the same.
  • Clear glass under 3/8 inch thick.
  • Odd-shaped windows over 25 sq ft void the warranty.
  • Uneven exterior shading voids the warranty.
  • Blackout film only on tempered single-pane glass.

If a film is not safe on your glass, we say so and recommend something that is. Check your glass.

Every install carries the manufacturer's film warranty plus ikonic's workmanship guarantee. The glass limits above are what keep that warranty valid.
