Two Commerce Citys. Two kinds of glass.

Commerce City is really two towns under one name. The older core around Derby and Adams City is mostly postwar housing, ranches and small two-stories built decades ago. North of about East 96th Avenue, out toward Brighton and Denver International Airport, the newer half is recent construction: Reunion, Reunion Ridge, Buffalo Run, Turnberry and North Range Village, with Fronterra Village, Buffalo Highlands and Second Creek Farm filling the corridor between 88th and 96th.

That split matters more for window film than anything else about the city. An older Derby ranch may still carry original single-pane glass. A Reunion two-story almost certainly has dual-pane insulated windows, and many of those carry a low-E coating. The same film is not safe on both. ikonic identifies the glass in each opening first, then picks the film. Commerce City sits in Adams County under the same high-altitude sun, and the sun does not care which half you live in.

New-build glass. A 40 square foot limit.

Dual-pane windows trap heat between the panes when the wrong film goes on them. That stress can crack the glass. The film manufacturer sets a limit for that reason: film goes on dual-pane glass only when the pane is under 40 square feet. A big great-room window or a wide sliding door in a North Range home can run right up against that number.

A low-E coating changes the answer again. Some films are approved on low-E glass, some are marked "use caution," and some are not allowed. We check your exact combination against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass pairings before we write a number down. If the chart says no, we say no and offer a film that passes.

Open ground. Nothing shades the west wall.

The north side of Commerce City spreads across open ground near the airport, next to the open grassland and wetland of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. There is very little in the way of a west-facing window and the afternoon sun.

That is the room that empties out after 3pm. A solar film cuts the heat and glare at the glass and keeps the view. Lighter shades like Ultra View 35 at $11 per sq ft or Pristine Ceramic 40 at $15 per sq ft do most of the work without making the room dark. West-facing sliders get the same treatment, subject to the 40 square foot rule above.

Metro districts and design rules.

Reunion and the neighborhoods around it are run through metropolitan districts, and many newer subdivisions come with exterior design rules. Reflective silver film can look like mirror glass from the street. If your district or HOA cares about that, neutral, low-reflectance films look closest to untreated glass from outside. Pristine Ceramic is a neutral, non-metal film. Ask us for the spec sheet on the film you choose. You can hand it to the board before we book.

We check your glass before we pick a film.

  • Single pane under 100 sq ft. Dual pane under 40 sq ft. Triple pane treated like dual pane.
  • Clear glass under 3/8 inch thick.
  • Odd-shaped windows over 25 sq ft and uneven exterior shading void the warranty.
  • If a film is not safe on your glass, we say so and recommend something that is. Check your glass.

Every install carries the manufacturer's film warranty plus ikonic's workmanship guarantee. The glass limits above are what keep that warranty valid.
