One-way film reverses at night. Frost doesn't.
Louisville grew up around coal. Mines operated inside today's city limits from the late 1800s until the middle of the last century. Old Town still carries that early layout: the historic downtown around Main Street, with cottages, bungalows and newer craftsman-style houses on small lots. When the house next door is a few steps away, your living room window looks into their kitchen and your bathroom window faces their side yard. That is where most Louisville privacy questions start.
The rest of the city is younger. Louisville grew several times over in the 1980s and 1990s, so most of its houses come from two decades of subdivisions. Then the Marshall Fire of December 30, 2021 destroyed hundreds of Louisville homes and damaged more. Most of those lots have since been rebuilt or are in the rebuilding process. Those houses have brand-new dual-pane glass, and that changes which film is safe on it.
Privacy comes in two honest versions. One-way reflective film gives daytime privacy and keeps your view out. It reverses after dark when the lights are on inside. Frost gives privacy day and night, lets the light through, and you cannot see out through it. We tell you which one fits each window before we quote.
Old Town lots. The neighbor's window is right there.
Old Town Louisville sits on small lots. Bathroom, bedroom and side-hall windows often face a neighbor's wall or window a few feet away. Curtains fix it and kill the light.
Frost at $11 per sq ft blurs the glass in both directions, around the clock, and keeps the room bright. Whiteout at $11 per sq ft does the same with a solid white look. Both are fine on the small, older windows these houses tend to have, subject to the glass check. Blackout, also $11 per sq ft, blocks light entirely and only goes on tempered single-pane glass.
For a street-facing living room where you still want to see out, Silver 20 at $10 per sq ft or Cool Alloy 20 at $12 per sq ft gives one-way daytime privacy. From the sidewalk the glass reads as a mirror in daylight. At night, with the lamps on, it reverses. Close the blinds after dark or choose Frost for that window.
Rebuilt homes. New glass, new limit.
A house rebuilt after the Marshall Fire, in Coal Creek Ranch or anywhere else in Louisville, has current dual-pane glass and often a low-E coating. Coal Creek Ranch was one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods. That new glass is good glass, and it comes with a rule.
- Dual-pane glass must be under 40 square feet per pane for the film to stay in warranty.
- Triple-pane glass is treated like dual-pane. Same 40 square foot cap.
- Low-E coatings and factory tints narrow which films the manufacturer's chart approves.
- A great-room window or a wide patio slider can be over the cap. We measure before we quote.
On approved dual-pane glass, Silver 20 at $10 per sq ft handles daytime privacy on the back of the house. Pristine Ceramic 40 at $15 per sq ft is the neutral, non-metal choice when heat is the bigger complaint and you do not want a mirror look. If a pane fails the chart, we say so and recommend a film that passes.
Trail-side and fairway windows. Open sightlines, open view.
Louisville maintains a large network of recreational trails, and Coal Creek Ranch is built around an 18-hole public golf course. A back wall of glass onto a fairway or a trail means nothing behind you but open ground. It also means anyone walking by can see in during the day.
Silver 20 at $10 per sq ft gives daytime privacy without giving up the view. Bedroom and bathroom glass on that side gets Frost at $11 per sq ft. Sliding doors near a lock can take Guardian security film at $20 per sq ft plus $4 per lineal ft edge sealing, which holds shattered glass in the frame and slows forced entry.

Add the street-facing living room window and the minimum stops mattering. What home window tinting costs in Louisville.

We check your glass before we pick a film.
We identify your glass and check it against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations before we recommend anything.
- Single-pane glass under 100 sq ft.
- Dual-pane glass under 40 sq ft. Triple-pane treated the same.
- Clear glass under 3/8 inch thick.
- Odd-shaped windows over 25 sq ft void the warranty.
- Uneven exterior shading voids the warranty.
- Blackout film only on tempered single-pane glass.
If a film is not safe on your glass, we say so and recommend something that is. Check your glass.
Every install carries the manufacturer's film warranty plus ikonic's workmanship guarantee. The glass limits above are what keep that warranty valid.
