A mile high. Strong sun most of the year.

Denver's official elevation is one mile, 5,280 feet, and the city gets strong, dry sun through most of the year. That sun lands on some of the oldest housing on the Front Range. Most of the houses in Washington Park are brick and roughly a century old. Park Hill's bungalows come from the same era, many with brick exteriors and original hardwood floors. Capitol Hill, Congress Park, Baker, Berkeley and Highland carry the same era.

At the other end of the city, Central Park (formerly Stapleton), Green Valley Ranch and Montbello are newer builds with dual-pane glass. ikonic is based in Thornton and installs home window film across the City and County of Denver. The older glass and the newer glass get different films, and we check each before we quote.

Original glass. Floors and furniture fading.

An old Denver brick house often still has some of its original windows: single-pane, wood-framed, thin. That glass lets in the full dose of UV and heat. South- and west-facing rooms show it first. Hardwood near the window goes pale. A rug has a sharp line where the sun stops. The sofa back fades before the front.

Film that blocks up to 99% of UV stops most of that damage without changing the look of a historic window. Ultra View 5 at $11 per sq ft is close to clear. Pristine Ceramic 70 and 80 at $16 per sq ft are neutral, non-metal films that also take the edge off heat. Single-pane glass is approved for interior film up to 100 square feet per pane, so almost every window in a bungalow qualifies. See UV and fade protection.

West-facing rooms after 3pm. Handled at the glass.

Denver's afternoon sun comes in low from the west, and a west-facing living room in a Park Hill bungalow or an upstairs bedroom in a Central Park two-story can be hard to use until sunset. Solar film cuts that heat and glare while the window stays a window.

Silver 20 at $10 per sq ft is the lowest-rate solar film we install. Ultra View 35 at $11 or Cool Alloy 35 at $12 keep the room lighter. Pristine Ceramic 40 at $15 gives a neutral look from inside and out. All of these are a lighter load on your AC in July. See heat and glare film.

Hail country. Glass that stays in the frame.

Denver is hail country, and Front Range storms break glass. Film is not a hail shield. But Guardian security film is tear-resistant and holds shattered glass together in the frame, which matters when a pane breaks, whether from a storm, a thrown rock, or someone trying to get in.

Guardian 4mil Clear, 8mil Clear, 8mil Silver and 12mil run $20 per sq ft plus $4 per lineal foot of edge sealing, which anchors the film to the frame. Front-door sidelights, sliding doors and ground-floor windows are the usual places. See security film.

Central Park, Green Valley Ranch. Newer glass, one rule.

Newer Denver homes have dual-pane, often low-E, glass. Many films are approved on it, but the manufacturer caps interior film on dual-pane glass at 40 square feet per pane, and triple pane is treated the same. A big patio slider can sit right at that number. We measure and check the chart before anything is quoted.

We check your glass before we pick a film.

Every Denver window gets identified and checked against the manufacturer's chart of 972 film-and-glass combinations. Single pane under 100 sq ft. Dual pane under 40 sq ft. Clear glass under 3/8 inch. Odd shapes over 25 sq ft and uneven exterior shading void the warranty. Triple pane treated like dual pane. If a film is not safe on your glass, we say so and recommend one that is. Check your glass.
