Why do west-facing windows get so hot in Colorado?
West-facing glass takes direct afternoon sun, when outdoor temperatures peak and the sun sits low enough to reach deep into a room. At altitude the UV is also stronger, so these rooms heat up and fade finishes faster than the rest of the house.
What does heat-rejection window film actually do?
Window film is a thin layer applied to the inside of the glass that reflects or absorbs part of the sun's energy before it enters the room. A clear or lightly shaded film can cut solar heat and block most UV while keeping the view. Results vary by film and shade, so ask for the manufacturer's published figures for the specific film, not a general claim.
Does the type of glass matter?
Yes, and it is the step most people skip. Film absorbs some energy, which warms the glass. On some glass, such as certain dual-pane units, tinted glass or Low-E coatings, that extra heat can stress the pane. Film makers publish glass compatibility charts for this reason. We check your glass against the film chart before recommending anything, and compatibility is confirmed on-site before any commitment.
What about sliding glass doors?
Sliding doors are often the largest single piece of west glass in a home, so they are the most common place to feel the heat. They are also large panes, which makes the compatibility check more important. The same rule applies: identify the glass, then pick the film.
What should I do first?
- Note which rooms get hot or faded and at what time of day.
- Find out whether your windows are single or dual pane, and whether the glass is tinted or coated.
- Book an in-home measure and glass check before choosing a film.
FAQ
Will film make my room dark? Not necessarily. Lighter shades reject heat while staying close to clear.
Will it stop furniture fading? It slows UV fading substantially; no film eliminates it.
Is it safe on dual-pane glass? Sometimes. It depends on the film and the glass, which is why we check first.
Can I see it before committing? Yes, we can show film samples against your glass at the measure visit.
